Matlab Function Format
There are several types of functions available with matlab including local functions nested functions private functions and anonymous functions.
Matlab function format. In matlab functions are defined in separate files. A line of code or its output can. Save the file either in the current folder or in a folder on the matlab search path. This type of function must be defined within a file not at the command line.
The name of the file and of the function should be the same. Formatting is specified by a string containing text format descriptors which start with the character and special characters such as n for a newline. Script files cannot have the same name as a function in the file. Functions are supported in scripts in r2016b or later.
To maintain a format across sessions use matlab preferences. In that case the best practice is to use the same name for the function and the file in this example fact m since matlab associates the program with the file name. Matlab always displays integer data types to the appropriate number of digits for the data type. See the format reference page for a list and description of all supported numeric formats.
For example matlab uses three digits to display numbers of type int8 i e 128 127. To maintain a format across sessions instead use matlab preferences. The format function affects only how numbers are displayed not how matlab computes or saves them. In a script file which contains commands and function definitions.
Setting format to short or long does not affect the display of integer variables. The specified format applies only to the current matlab session. The function sprintf puts the formatted output in a string. Often you store a function in its own file.
The matlab function fprintf produces formatted output on the screen or in a file. Configure the run button for functions. Use the format function for example. To see which type is currently in use type.
In numeric formats matlab format function affect only how numbers appear in command window or output window. Wrap lines of code to fit window width. To maintain a format across sessions choose a numeric format or line spacing option in the command window preferences. Format short format short e format long.
The specified format applies only to the current matlab session. Run functions that require some initial setup from the editor by configuring the run button. Select matlab command window and then choose a numeric format option. The name of the file must match the name of the first function in the file.
Functions operate on variables within their own workspace which is also called the local workspace separate from the workspace you access at the matlab command prompt which is called the base workspace. Format by itself changes the output format to the default type short which is 5 digit scaled fixed point values. Functions must be at the end of the file.
